I’ve been moving more and more away from buying brand name organic foods for a while now, initially because of allergies and cost. Then I realized the joy of focusing on local food, but, WOW, I am surprised to see how many of my old, favorite, organic brands have been purchased by the major corporate food processors! Have a look.

I’m watching the Capitol Climate Action on live stream now from D.C. Amazing! “We shall not be moved!”, they are singing right now. This is such a courageous, inspiring group– taking a stand to save the earth for future generations! They have 3 of 5 gates occupied NOW, and they are planning to cross the line and shut the coal plant down. The results of this PowerShift are already starting to flow; Nancy Pelosi just announced a few days ago that she wants to immediately shift the Capitol to be powered by natural gas instead of coal. Its a great start! I want to share my favorite chant:
“Climate Change, What’s the solution? Green Jobs Revolution! Poverty, what’s the solution? Green Jobs Revolution! Eco-Justice, what’s the solution? Green Jobs Revolution! Oil Wars, what’s the solution? Green Jobs Revolution!

Obama’s speech tonight was great as usual. He focused on his three priorities–renewable energy, health care, and education—in that order. Whatever differences I may have with some of Obama’s policy priorities, I applaud him that he seems to always be making renewable energy number 1!
My main disagreement is related to his emphasis on reviving consumption. While on the one hand that makes sense as a critical goal in the old paradigm. Eventually, we have to find our way to a steady state economy that does not rely on endless consumption, but rather growth in quality of life, as consumption shifts toward recycling and reusing everything. But I might have fainted if Obama started talking about that sort of thing…
It is also noteworthy that he got a huge round of applause when he demanded that Congress send him “cap and trade” legislation. He seemed to be indicating his next policy priority.
The biggest surprise for me was when he snuck in a bold proclamation that he would end “direct payments” to “large agribusiness”. What exactly is he saying here? Is he talking about subsidies for agribusiness? If so, he may have just made the first step toward establishing local, sustainable food systems as a national priority. On ABC, the Republican commentator immediately attacked that statement, and began raising similar questions. The commentator said, “If he meant ending subsidies for agribusiness, he is basically talking about ending the American agriculture program.” Exactly! Now that would be beyond my wildest dreams!
